Megamind
Dreamworks delivers
Megamind has no right to be as good as it actually was. The plot is stupid. It revolves around a superhero and villain who have a rivalry and one day the villain gets lucky and takes care of the hero but then the villain gets lonely and decides to take some of the old hero’s DNA and make a new one and he also falls in love with the reporter whom he used to kidnap all the time and….yeah, it’s that bad. Also, the 3D wasn’t really all that impressive. I have really bad eyesight already and I swear that the combined dimness of the theater and the movie made it worse. I had to remove the annoying glasses several times to rub my eyes.
However, I really, really have a soft spot for Will Ferrell. And Tina Fey. And Jonah Hill. And Brad Pitt.
That’s right; four of the biggest stars in the world compose the cast of Megamind and that is really, in the end, what makes it worthwhile. Ferrell does great voice work. I give kudos also to the filmmakers for matching the voice to the character. It looks extremely realistic, or as realistic as this sort of thing can be. In fact, there were several instances where the characters onscreen appeared to be channeling the very spirit of the actors portraying them. That’s the beauty of technology nowadays.
And the movie is funny. There were several instances where I actually chuckled. Ask anyone who has seen several movies with me; I don’t laugh easily (call it a case of “been there, heard that”;). But there was just something about the way that man said “Yes, yes, only the best for you, dear” that brought a smile to my face. My favorite lines: “You may be a villain, but you’re no supervillain.” “What’s the difference?” “PRESENTATION!”
Still, as I mentioned, the story is bordering on complete nonsense. And Dreamworks does not have a great track record with animated movies. I liked the first two Shreks, thought the third was mediocre, and hated Shrek Forever After. I liked Kung Fu Panda and hated Monsters vs. Aliens. I’ve seen several of their others and have mixed feelings on them and I plan on checking out How to Train Your Dragon before long. Anyway, with Megamind, I’m confident that Dreamworks may finally be finding their way. They may even be good enough someday to take on the big kid on the block. I’m not going to say any names, but his initials are Disney.
In conclusion (since this is obviously a thesis), I can say that Megamind is worth seeing. Go to the theater, put on the stupid sunglasses, and enjoy. But there’s also nothing wrong with waiting for the DVD. Heck, get the 2D version. I can promise two things: there’s not a whole lot of crap flying at your head, which some folks prefer, during the movie and it will definitely be of a higher picture quality on DVD. So maybe it is worth waiting for. All I know is that I’ve seen it and I liked it.
